Durga PujaClick here for Durga Puja 2008 Slide Show Saraswati PujaThe Saraswati Pujo has been the signature event of Baybasi for the past 8 years. It is the platform bringing together friends from the Bay area to meet and greet each other on this auspicious occasion. The one day event marks the beginning with Maa Saraswati's pujo with full rites and rituals. The pujo is followed by 'hathe khodi' (writing ceremony) for kids, prasad and lunch. The day does not break here as no Bengali festival is complete without "adda". In preparation for the most awaited extravaganza people take a break in the afternoon to get their best dresses on and rehearse their performances. The cultural evening caters to the necessity of a platform for kids and adults alike, to shed their inhibitions of public performance and stage fright. The Saraswati Pujo has seen an ever expanding participation from kids, and adults. So much so that over the years the cultural function has become from an hour's event to much above a couple of hours of jammed performances. The dances, recitations, songs, and the play performed by Baybasi group is an event everyone awaits for months. Be a part of our next Saraswati Pujo in 2009, we will post and communicate the details in near future. Holi Celebration and Volleyball TournamentOnly the rain can stop us from volleying the ball over the net! – The motto of almost ‘most’ of our players. The event has grown from just two teams competing for the winner’s trophy, to a full blown competition with many a teams vying for the top slots through round- robin leagues. Some of the team names from the past are enough evidence to reflect the enthusiasm of the players in the Bay area- "Excalibur", "Vijayee", "Humse Badkar Kaun", "Shogun Six", "JitBoi" Somehow, the game – its energy and entertainment factor have bonded extremely well with the festival of Holi. It has become such a tradition for Baybasi that that Holi celebration has to be preceded by Volleyball tournament – held in absolute fervor, followed with utterly delicious “Mangsho and Bhaat”. Baybasi Bijoya Sommiloni 2007What comes to your mind when you think of festivities in your Bengal? The delicacies, the friends, the dresses, and the never ending – ever entertaining ‘adda’. Baybasi celebrates the Bijoya Sammeleni to bring those very feelings – for the friends and families living in the bay area. We meet and greet, exchange heartiest wishes and seek blessings from our elders. In the true bangla tradition we engage in ‘adda’ where topics usually range from world politics or global warming, to Behala/Garia/ Dunlop, to Jyoti-babu or Asim-babu, the economics of India, Bipasaha Basu or Priety Zinta, KC Das or Haldiram. In all, you must have drawn a good picture by now – we engage ourselves in true ‘adda’. Ofcourse, no adda is complete without debating the contention of Dada for the captaincy, or who is the ‘toss ka boss’. The evening follows on to a spread of rich and spicy delicacies and deserts. We wish to meet soon, and do disperse, everyone taking back with them a bit of more Bengal than what they brought this evening.
